Enhanced Conversions for Google Ads: Setup and Common Mistakes

Enhanced conversions are one of the most useful upgrades you can make to Google Ads measurement. They help Google match conversions to ad clicks when cookies alone fall short, which means more accurate reporting and better signals for Smart Bidding. They are also easy to set up badly, so this guide covers both the setup and the mistakes we see most often.

Quick answer: Google Ads enhanced conversions send hashed first-party customer data, such as an email address or phone number, alongside your conversion tags. The data is hashed with SHA-256 before it leaves the browser or server, and Google matches it to signed-in Google accounts to attribute conversions to ad interactions. There are two types: enhanced conversions for web, which improve online conversion tracking, and enhanced conversions for leads, which improve offline conversion tracking from your CRM.

How enhanced conversions work

Standard Google Ads conversion tracking relies on the click identifier (GCLID) and cookies. When those are missing, for example because of browser restrictions or a different device, the conversion may not be attributed.

Enhanced conversions add another way to match:

  1. A visitor clicks your ad, then later converts, for example by submitting a form or buying.
  2. Your tag captures customer data they provided, such as email, phone, name and address.
  3. The data is normalised and hashed using SHA-256.
  4. Google compares the hashed data with hashed data from signed-in Google accounts.
  5. If there is a match with an ad interaction, the conversion is attributed.

Google does not receive the plain-text data from your tag, only the hash. You still need a lawful basis and appropriate consent, and your privacy notice should explain that data is shared with Google for advertising measurement.

Enhanced conversions for web vs for leads

Comparing web and lead enhanced conversions for Google Ads measurement.

Enhanced conversions for web

Used when the conversion happens on your website, such as a purchase or sign-up. Customer data is captured on the conversion page and sent with the conversion tag. This improves the accuracy of online conversion measurement.

Enhanced conversions for leads

Used when the valuable outcome happens later, offline, such as a lead becoming a qualified opportunity or a sale in your CRM. You capture hashed customer data when the form is submitted, then later upload or send the converted leads from your CRM, using the same customer data to match. This is a modern alternative to classic GCLID-based offline conversion tracking, and it does not require you to store the GCLID, although sending it where available is still helpful.

For lead generation businesses, enhanced conversions for leads is often the bigger win, because it lets Google optimise for real sales rather than form fills.

How to set up Google Ads enhanced conversions

Step 1: Turn it on in Google Ads

In Google Ads, go to Goals, Conversions, Settings, and find Enhanced conversions. Turn it on, accept the customer data terms, and choose your implementation method: Google tag, Google Tag Manager or the API.

Step 2: Decide how to capture the data

You have three main options for enhanced conversions for web:

  • Automatic: Google's tag detects customer data on the conversion page. Quick, but less reliable, especially when the data is not displayed on the page.
  • Code (data layer): your site pushes customer data into the data layer on conversion. This is the most reliable approach.
  • CSS selectors: GTM reads values from page elements. Fragile, because a design change can break it.

Step 3: Configure in Google Tag Manager

If you use GTM:

  1. Make sure the data layer contains the customer data at the moment of conversion, for example `email` and `phone_number` pushed with your `form_submit` or `purchase` event.
  2. Create a User-Provided Data variable, choosing "Code" and mapping each field to data layer variables.
  3. Open your Google Ads Conversion Tracking tag, tick "Include user-provided data from your website" and select the variable.
  4. Make sure the Conversion Linker tag fires on all pages.
  5. Preview, test, and publish.

Step 4: Format data correctly

Google normalises and hashes data automatically when using the Google tag or GTM. If you hash it yourself, for example with the API, you must:

  • Trim whitespace and convert email to lower case before hashing.
  • Use E.164 format for phone numbers, for example `+447700900123`.
  • Hash with SHA-256.

Step 5: Check diagnostics

Google Ads shows enhanced conversions diagnostics on each conversion action. It can take several days for status and match data to appear. Look for warnings about missing data, formatting issues or low match coverage.

Common enhanced conversions mistakes

Troubleshooting common Google Ads enhanced conversions mistakes in diagnostics.

1. Customer data terms not accepted

Without accepting the terms in Google Ads, nothing happens, however well the tag is configured.

2. Data captured on the wrong page

Customer data must be available when the conversion tag fires. If your thank-you page does not contain the email and you use automatic detection, there is nothing to send. A data layer push at submission is safer.

3. Relying on CSS selectors

Selectors break with theme updates, A/B tests or form plugin changes. If you must use them, re-test after any site change.

4. Badly formatted phone numbers

UK numbers entered as `07700 900123` need converting to E.164. Where you control formatting yourself, this is a common cause of poor matching.

5. Ignoring consent

Enhanced conversions work alongside Consent Mode v2. If `ad_user_data` is denied, user-provided data should not be sent. Our Consent Mode v2 guide explains the signals and how to test them.

6. Duplicate conversion tags

Sites often fire both a GA4-imported conversion and a Google Ads tag for the same action, both set as primary. Choose one primary source per action to avoid double counting.

7. Enhanced conversions for leads without a CRM process

The setup only pays off if someone actually uploads or syncs qualified leads and sales. Agree what counts as a qualified lead, which CRM stage triggers it, and how often data is sent back to Google Ads.

8. Never testing end to end

Submit a test lead, check the data layer in GTM preview, confirm the tag fires with user-provided data, and watch diagnostics in Google Ads.

Enhanced conversions and offline conversion tracking

Classic offline conversion tracking relies on storing the GCLID with each lead and uploading it with the outcome. It works, but GCLIDs are often lost through form plugins, redirects or CRMs that do not store them.

Enhanced conversions for leads reduces that dependency by matching on hashed customer data. Many businesses use both: GCLID where captured, plus hashed email or phone as a fallback. Either way, getting real sales data back into Google Ads is one of the best ways to improve bidding quality.

If you advertise on Meta as well, the equivalent approach is the Meta Conversions API, which also uses hashed customer data and server events.

FAQs

Are Google Ads enhanced conversions GDPR compliant?

They can be used compliantly. Data is hashed before sending, but you still need a lawful basis, appropriate consent signals and a clear privacy notice.

How long before enhanced conversions show results?

Diagnostics usually take several days to populate. Any change in reported conversions builds gradually as more conversions are matched.

Do I need enhanced conversions if I already import GA4 conversions?

Enhanced conversions apply to Google Ads conversion tags, so if you rely only on GA4 imports, you will not benefit in the same way. Many advertisers use a Google Ads tag with enhanced conversions as the primary action.

What is the difference between enhanced conversions for leads and offline conversion imports?

Classic imports match on GCLID. Enhanced conversions for leads match on hashed customer data captured at form submission, which is more resilient when the GCLID is lost.
